HELPFUL TIPS What are hemorrhoids? The blood vessels underneath the anal skin and rectal lining are known as hemorrhoids and you are born with them! This tissue becomes irritating to us when it swells. Swelling can lead to drainage of mucous, clotting of the underlying vessel, or breakage of the overlying skin leading to itching, pain and bleeding respectively. The initial instinct of the person suffering is to stop the pain, itching and bleeding with topical creams. These creams are widely available over-the-counter and represent a large sale market. But the creams do not stop the swelling and therefore, they offer little benefit. The only chance to make the symptoms stop is to stop the swelling. So how do you do that? Well, swelling is caused by increased venous pressure. When you, strain or squat you increase your abdominal pressure that then increase your hemorrhoid venous pressure and you get swelling. So, whether it is your brother who lifts heavy weights, your grandfather who reads while sitting on the toilet or the little lady gardening next door--- they’re all prone to hemorrhoidal swelling, because their daily activities lead to increased venous pressure. So, instead, lighten the weights a little in the gym, take the library out of the bathroom and kneel in the garden, not squat. Understanding YOU!
